As part of the “Fast Track to 5G” initiative, Hawaii’s existing 4G cell towers were upgraded and boosted in power. In the early rollout the 5G network is being built around the existing 4G core, while carriers continue to grid out dedicated 5G small cells across the islands. Two different types of 5G small cells have been appearing everywhere, and Waikiki so far seems to be the most densely covered by the mix of 4G and 5G.
5G uses higher frequencies that don’t travel as far or penetrate as deeply as 4G, so carriers install 5G small cells in much denser formations. 4G travels farther and penetrates materials more easily, so those antennas tend to be mounted higher and spaced farther apart. Different characteristics — but both add to the wireless radiation in your everyday environment.
If you can see one of these antennas from your home or workplace, there’s a good chance you’re receiving steady exposure. Many of the people I work with report poor sleep and low energy, and a growing body of research has raised concerns about the health effects of long-term exposure near cell sites.
