Self-Driving Cars and 5G Microwave Radiation Towers

Mike Wong July 23, 2023 2 min read

I spotted these posts along the freeway from Aloha Stadium to Waikiki — some just a quarter mile apart. They’re noticeably thicker than lamp posts and currently hold only a small camera on top. To me that looks like a placeholder for something much bigger down the road.

My guess is that they’re intended for future 5G towers to support self-driving cars. 5G small cells are largely omnidirectional, meaning they broadcast in all directions. Sitting in a car surrounded by these could mean significant exposure, and a metal vehicle body can reflect and concentrate signals inside the cabin.

If these do turn out to be 5G sites and you live nearby, it’s worth understanding your exposure. Prevention is key — the time to pay attention is before the equipment goes live, not after.

If you have any information about these posts, I’d love to hear it — send us an email.
